Industry in action..

Sometimes, on a weekend, when the mind's activity has slowed down substantially, I find myself more able to think about how I can involve Winkie more in my work, so we could spend some time together, in industry.

This weekend, I was busy grinding and restocking all my spice bottles. I had just taken out a spoon and was all set to start transferring the powders, when it struck me....why should not Winkie do this??? I called him over and laid out the task and asked if he was upto it. And of course he was. A novel experience is never one to be missed now, is it?? And while I went about the rest of my chores, he patiently spooned in the jeera and the dhaniya and the haldi and the chilli powder. When it finished, he was still raring to go. So I thought quickly, and gave him his next task. To find the garlic in the pantry, fill a bowl with water, and remove each pod and plonk it into the water, so I could easily peel the skin a little later. (The menu incidentally, was garlic rasam.). He struggled to find the garlic. What is garlic Amma...he asked, helplessly. I was a little shocked. A 5 year old and no idea what garlic was?? Tch tch tch.

Once he got the garlic, he wanted to know how he was supposed to get the water. Think for yourself, kanna...I told him, and turned back to my work. Seconds later, I heard the chair being dragged across the floor to the basin, water being filled, and then, the next question...how do I take this garlic out?...I showed him one, and then he quickly got the idea. He learnt to recognise which were the bad ones and hence to be thrown, and which ones went plonk into the bowl. In between, he muttered how hard it was. Golden words!!!
I grabbed the chance to tell him that this is how hard his Amma worked everyday to put fresh food on the table, and would he remember that the next time he couldn't finish his lunch in school? Yes...he nodded sagely. And on, it went. He got 3 big clusters shelled to my full satisfaction. And he also proceeded to peel the skin.

By this time, I could see that he was tired and I was going to give him a break, when I stepped back for a bit and marvelled at the sight. Small little frame, outlined against the bright sunlight, ears popping out from the recent haircut, head bent down in concentration, hands engaged in industry, little tired sighs escaping his lips every 2 seconds, fingers flicking off the peels that clung adamantly on. It was just too cute. After my fill of that, I called it a day and shooed him out with a big tight squeeze. And that was the sweet highlight of this weekend. Yours?

I am really proud of winkie. Abirami very very rarely helps me in the kitchen. Fault could be mine too as i have very little patience to guide her :(

I got some helpers and cleaned the whole house, serviced my computer, gas stove, sorted out a lot of old junkies. For me, clean home = pure mind :). So all in all, a very satisfying productive weekend.

Thanks Monika. It sure is fun! :)

K - What a fantastic weekend!! Awesome! And to think I have to pull this off over the next 2 days, by my lone self...not fair!:(

Hai tharini,
Aditya has the exact same shirt. By the way, it is better not to make them handle spice powder, if they drop it, the chances of powder getting into the eyes is very high and is also dangerous. Good job winkie.

how beautiful Tharini! :)

i always remember my parents asking us to help in little things at house since such a young age. simple things like taking tea cups in the kitchen after chai is done or going down and buying bread when little older.

i hope i can do the same for Cubby! he has also started putting plates in the sink and putting his own dirty clothes in his sepearte bucket when told. and its all so fascinating to watch! :)he puts lot of clean vessels too, but then he is just starting to learn! :)

a big hug to Winkie and his hard working mommy!

cheers!

I love the T-shirt!

I think I've changed my mind - instead of having a baby I think I should have a readymade 5-year old who will peel garlic for me. At what age can I ask him to chop teh onions too?

How was the rasam? :)

Mine helps a lot(brings back empty cupd/plates left by her DAD fro mthe living room to the kitchen) and orders me to clean too. Nothing should stick on her feet, otherwise she'll point me at it and order me to clean it. If i ignore her, she'll go on to bring the carpet cleaner and try to turn the knob as we do (thankfully she cant figure it out yet) and clean it up.ITs so ownderful to watch thme grow. Bless your little boy.

everyone likes the tee huh!! i did too, which is why i bought it and then yday, he stuck a sticker right under the last part of the sentence....'you should see my mom'...it was a sticker of the incredible hulk!!! hmph.

so thiru...that's the full and complete story there.

thanks vj.

broom....his spouse will have reason to thank me if he keeps it up. that's where the challenge lies1 :)

mm...:)

revathi...that is indeed jeera powder and nothing has been added to it. i know store bougth versions seem lighter, but home made is the real stuff! :D

abha. how cute for cubby to do those little things. i can just imagine him toddling over to deposit teh dirty as well as the clean ones. so cute.

rasam was nice and spicy and uplifting for the cold weather outside, ana. :)

aa ... so utterly cute. it IS wonderful. she's a great one to train from the early years! :)
