Text talk challenge
There's this cool thing in Winkie's school called text talk. Its a little group activity where a bunch of kids are read aloud to, and thus introduced to a few sophisticated words which are new to them. The idea being, the earlier they are introduced to these words, the better are the chances that they will begin to use them as part of their vocabulary. So, every week, we will be sent home a handout containing the text-talk words and are encouraged to use in it conversations with our kids.
I stuck it up on the fridge so me and R could see it and be reminded to use it. Last evening, when I first used a word, Winkie's head snapped up in surprise.....as if I had just said something magical. He looked at me wondrously, amazed that Amma knew a bit of that special language that he hears only at school. And little by little, I used each of the 6 text talk words, and re-emphasised the meaning through the context. Thus now, Winkie knows that I find him very amusing when he makes his funny faces. I detest any clutter lying around, and he detests any wet spots on the carpet. He knows that I feel content after a good meal. He knows that he mimics me when I say I love you, and he says I love you back. And he doesn't much get what snarling is all about. And he figures that he has gumption if he stands up to a bully on the bus.
So there you have it people...this week's text talk words : Amusing, Detest, Gumption, Snarled, Mimic, Content. I figure, why should only Winkie have all the fun with words in school? Why not have our very own text talk challenge....by using all these 6 words in one full meaningful, justifiably long, sentence. Upto it? If so...coin a sentence with all these words and drop a line here. A winner will be picked out in 24 hours starting.......now!!! :D

'Its amusing to see people who detest broccoli have the gumption to snarl and mock asparagus-haters who are content with their own quirks and hence do not bother to mimic the rest just to conform.'
Phew :D.
Very effective, isn't it?
On a different note, I got reminded about your post about how Winkie has picked up reading (so long back), when yesterday my brat started reading on his own from 'The Cat in the Hat'. The brat seems to enjoy and has been seen with book in hand for quite sometime now. Can you recommend any books for early readers which were effective for Winkie while he started reading?
Altoid: Wow!
phew.. lovely.. like anyone has a chance after that stunner altoid came up with...
Alty : I had the feeling you would be the first one to comment on this one and contribute and whoa!!! I agree, people, its a tough contest....but cmon....lets have another sentence! (alty...next time, I am imposing word limits for the likes of you!)
Subha : Congratulations! Self reading is such a fun milestone! Actually, I had Winkie try any and every book we got from the library and not just any early reader variety. All the Dr. Seuss books with their rhyme and repitition are good books for practising, i think. If I can remember any in specific, I'll let you know. Oh, he did like reading those short Curious George stories all by himself.
Silent one : C'mon....give it a shot. pretty puhlease. :D
ooooooooooooooh. awesome. totally gonna try this.
altoid: you are unbelievable. Wow, just Wow.
"Its amusing to read a book to a toddler who only likes to read when we have some vehicular content in them, where he would mimic every sound of the said vehicle otherwise he would detest the said effort and lack the gumption even to try and instead snarl at us for even picking up the book!"
:D
Atly - WOW! that was an inspiration! :)
awesome! some of my friends studying for the GRE dont know what gumption means!! no wonder you American kids are so good at the spelling bee stuff :))))
I detest those ruffians who find it amusing to mimic the old lady when she displayed great gumption by snarling at them for vandalizing her garden, tending to which always made her feel content and at peace.
Here goes: Our precious little ones amuse us sometimes when A tries to pretend snarling at little D and D mimics her sis and then she has the gumption to climb over the couch from the back with a sneaky laugh on her face and though we detest all the shouting and hungama,we are content ,watching the ever so silly antics of our little imps.
However amusing the challenge is, I have to be content being a spectator because I detest finishing last and might even snarl at you if I dont win but then that would mean I lack gumption so I ll go ahead and mimic Altoid and accept this challenge. :)
oooo...awesome one liners! Its going to be tought to decide.
As amusing as it might sound, i once detested "mommy bloggers" who i thought were a
compacent lot, forever bragging about their children and choices, vainly mimicking
Mother Nature, and snarling at anybody who had the gumption to disagree with them,
before i realized that they were in fact content, grateful and instinctively protective.
One should be rather content, even amused to see this battle of wits being played out, instructions being mimicked to perfection and with such gumption that would also ensure a fair amount of rather detesting snarls amongst the competitors :D.
Being a stuck up and regressive wife, she was unnaturally content with her own oppressed marriage and quite detested her peers who had the gumption to break free of the shackles of oppression, and so instead of commending them on their efforts, she snarled at them for mimicking the west, inviting rather amusing remarks about the state of her mental well-being.
What an ingenious challenge!! And equally amusing/hilarious one-liners!!
I am content to show a snarl when I lack the gumption to openly detest idiots who amuse themselves by mimicing others. (22 words)
I lack the gumption to openly snarl at or detest people who are content in amusing themselves by mimicing others. (20 words)
Hi Tharini,
What is criteria for winning? Most Humorous? Least number of words perhaps ;-)?
Shilpa G.
I have the gumption to contentedly amuse myself mimicking those who detest snarly attitude.
(14 words)
I detest snarly people who are content amusing themselves mimicking heroes with gumption.
(13 words :))
S,
What a gumption to contentedly snarl at an amused mimic!
Sorry for invading your comments space Tharini!
whow!!
i almost decided NOT to put my sentence because it doesnt make half as much sense!
altoid and k3 rock!! :D
'I would be quite content if someone find its amusin when i mimic a known person though why should some misunderstand my gumption and snarl at me with detest writ large in their eyes is a mystery to me."
ok! i think this is THE longest phrase apart from being nonsensical!! :p
had fun doing this tharini!
cheers!
abha
Wow folks. Wow! W.h.a.t a contest! I had declared that I would pick 'A' winner yesterday. And it is not an amusing task mind you, and I detest the process of elimination, and I would much rather content myself with declaring everybody who participated a winner, but that would have all of you snarling at me, and I do not have the gumption to stick to my guns, so I'll go ahead and mimic all the judges from those TV contest shows and say....
You are all winners here. Each and every one of you. Yet, I have the unenviable task of picking one, which I must do. But whether you get chosen or not, remember...that you go home a winner!
The winner of this week's Text Talk challenge is...........*pin drop silence*....
Altoid!!!!
For using all the words in perfect context, with a dash of humour and eccentricity which made me laugh!
For next week's challenge, I am having more rigid criteria....you guys are one smart lot! Thanks for all the smiles on this one!
*sulk* Congrats Altoid! *gives a dirty look to the judge*
Bah! I am going off to boo's corner!
:D
Congrats Alty!
Congratulations Alty :D.
Honestly - that one was a gem.
But then again, her repartees always are :):).
I completely agree with Tharini. I was expecting it to be her anyway. It was brilliant. congrats altoid!
titally well deserved!
it was kinda difficult to top that!!
had lotsa fun doing it!
cheers!
Ahh. Its been a while since I've seen 26 comments on one post. :D
Boo...if it makes you feel any better, you were the next close contender. ;)
Ok K3....but do come back for the next TT Challenge. :)
Thank you Gauri, Anitha & Abha....for being such cool sports! :P
